4. An inspiring story from Sandy Legler Keith on how she started to quilt.
“I was in my late 30s when I decided I wanted to make quilts like my two grandmas did. So off to Adult Ed I went. One class and I was hooked. I was already a competent seamstress but making a quilt was so much different. I had to make my own templates, draw them on the back of the fabric, cut them out with scissors and in class, we had to stitch the pieces by hand. I had sewn for years so I had a decent supply of scraps. So did my mom and my maternal grandma. My very first quilt was the double wedding ring. It took me a year to make it. Then I showed it to my now grown and married daughter and she began recognizing many of the fabrics and she was so in love with the quilt that I gave it to her. I am now 81 and still quilting and all of my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have quilts made especially for them. What I am most thankful for is the invention of the rotary cutter, rulers, cutting mats….You get the picture. Quilting now goes so much faster and that’s a good thing because I’m not getting any younger.” – Sandy Legler Keith
